Here for the Internet

Technology and the Internet has become so prominent in our everyday lives. Thirty or so years ago the Internet was not talked about much, but today it seems like everything that people talk about comes back to being related to the Internet or how that person saw it on one of their devices. Between two readings the authors took opposite standings. Lindsay Saienni claims that technology and the Internet are ruining people. Whereas Kenneth Goldsmith believes that the Internet and technology can be helping us in the long run.

When comparing the positions that Saienni and Goldsmith take on the Internet, I feel as if Goldsmith’s view has a lot of validity on his perspective compared to Saienni. In Saienni’s article she just states how she doesn’t like the way R.M. Drake writes his poems or how he posts them on Instagram. She does not consider it real poetry.

Goldsmith on the other hand gives examples of how he has seen technology and the Internet working in favor of people. In the introduction to his book Wasting Time on the Internet he explains how he was reading something online about how people do not read as much as they use to, which is kind of funny in a way because he had to have read that. Another factor that he brings in is communication. Most people in older generations do not believe that talking over the phone or through text messages is not communicating. Although talking face to face is better understood, texting and calling is still a form of communication and people in my generation are more comfortable with talking that way.

With Goldmsith giving all of the examples in his book helps me believe my stance on being pro-tech even more. I feel this way because he helps you notice things that you made not have recognized without him pointing out.
