Everyone takes a position when it comes to the argument on whether technological developments have impacted the way we interact with literature. The Internet is seen as either ruining or reinvigorating literature. However, technology is far from ruining literature.
I’ve seen some argue that, because of the Internet, people aren’t reading as much anymore. Yet when you think about it and see what you do on a daily basis, you actually read and write more than you realize. This can be through sending and receiving emails, checking your social media accounts, and even skimming or grazing over material.
When it comes to skimming, while it’s not reading, some see it as a loss in our ability to engage with a subject deeply. That’s not the case though. People, myself included, skim over information or posts until they see something that sparks their interest. Once that happens, we read the material more carefully and possibly even research further into it.
Due to the way we read and write in this generation, it isn’t recognized as true literature yet. Though, with the many writers that are using the content of the Internet in order to complete their works, it is only a matter of time until it will fully be seen as literature.
