The current state of the internet is not okay. We have three to four large companies all competing for our time. The less time we spend in “the real world” the more money they make, and the happier their stockholders are. However, I do not think this is the end of our society as we know it.
One of the main reasons why I am pro technology is simply, books are heavy and inconvenient. While reading Wasting time on the Internet I accidentally spilled some of my smoothie on it, if I had been reading the book on my phone, I would not have stained the page. Furthermore, while commuting everyday, it is very difficult to read print text. Imagine riding standing up on the university bus trying to keep a newspaper or even a novel open while keeping your balance. Both of these tasks would be much easier while scrolling through a smartphone. My iPhone can hold 64 gigabytes of information, this would be tens of thousands of books that I could hold on it for instant access. With the rise of cloud storage, our access becomes greater and gives us similar reach to videos and photos stored on the web.
To close, I think that the internet is slowly corrupting us if we don’t watch it closely, but the technology itself is a huge benefit and aid to society when used correctly. It is a very useful slave, but is slowly becoming a more dangerous master.
