Today we have an older generation that usually struggles with the entire idea of technology, but what happens when millennials are the older generation? We as people will continue to evolve over time and so will education. In 10 years, education will have centered around new technology that improves with every day. In 1913, in the New York Dramatic Mirror Thomas Edison had predicted that “books will soon be obsolete in the schools…. It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture. Our school system will be completely changed in ten years”, and with every ten years it continues to change.
In Stephen King’s novella UR, he writes, “This is a literature class, not an internet chatroom.” However, only a couple paragraphs later Wesley is ordering a kindle for himself. Even the older generation tries to deny their interest in new technology but knows its benefit. I feel that in the future this evolution of iPads, tablets and kindles will only continue. Eventually every student in the classroom will have some sort of tablet at hand in which their entire education is stored upon. Paper will no longer be a need and handwriting will be horrendous. I can only hope that this comes with balance between physical books and writing on paper and the technology to be used in the classroom. In “The Importance of Balancing Classroom Technology Use” by Kate Durocher, she writes “It’s a learning curve. It’s a balance of using tech effectively while still fostering skills essential to life, like writing and reading.” In doing this I feel will have the best outcome for students in the coming years.
