Let’s Get it On (Safely and Responsibly)

Most people know the story of Adam and Eve. They’re put in the garden, Eve eats a forbidden fruit, and everything goes to absolute hell, am I right? Stupid Eve just had to go and make bad decisions, and now the entire world is terrible. Sounds familiar?

Well actually, this story sounds a lot like modern day sex education. Instead of actually teaching teenagers about sexuality, many schools teach ‘abstinence only’ sex education or don’t teach it at all, making sex the modern day “forbidden fruit”.

While states are trying to lower the percentage of teenage pregnancy and sexual transmitted diseases, teenagers are not given the tools to take responsibility over their sexual health. During this particular time in their lives, teenagers are bound to have questions about their sexuality, but much like Anna in 50 Shades of Grey, they are lefts at the mercy of Google and Pornhub.

A teenager myself a few years ago, I can remember sex education much like the sex education in Mean Girls. Sex was BAD, and if you had it, there goes your entire life, ruined.

As students, we weren’t taught that sex was a healthy, natural, and dare I say fun part of life; it was a spooky mystery for us. It wasn’t until I was older where I was able to educate myself on healthy sexuality, and thankfully, I was able to do so that I could make responsible decisions. However, for some teenagers, that education comes after something bad has already happened, and that is the very reason comprehensive sexual education is important for students.
