Twitter University

You cannot deny that one of the biggest influences on young people today is the Internet. People always joke on Twitter about how our feed teaches us more than school and that they should graduate from “Twitter University.” Everyday there is a new life hack to learn on Twitter. But more than that, it is a place where people can express how they feel and share personal things about their relationships.

Today, I learn more about people’s personal lifestyle’s and relationships than what a sex education class would teach me, and no, I’m not talking about the “Horny Facts” account. That is because it is a lot more popular today to share details about sex and sexuality without being shamed or brought down because of it. Seeing others live their lives through social media has taught me, and many others, about different kinds of relationships between all people.

Being that I went to private Catholic high school, it was all about only teaching us what they believe to be true and denying anything that contradicted them. Instead of teaching us about sex, they only taught about abstinence. This causes young high school girls to listen to what their boyfriends have to say about sex, and as you can imagine that does not end well for them. So, if our parents did not teach us, we were left to our own devices.

This led many of us to the Internet in the age where people are open about sex and sexuality. So, we learned things about same sex relationships, different types of sexual relationships and kinks, and what the Internet thought about sex, which is that it is normal, and you should not be shamed for doing it. Now, sex is everywhere and is even used to promote a lot of products because it sells. It is almost impossible to watch tv and not see a commercial hinting towards sex, or to go on Twitter and not see someone talking about sex and their kinks or preferences.

50 Shades of Grey is one example as to how people view sexual relationships these day verses how they were viewed many years ago. A book like that would have never been as popular back then as it is today. Sexuality is becoming more of an everyday topic rather than something we turn our head away from because it is embarrassing or we’re afraid of what others will think.
