The terrible sex education I got in middle school did two things for me. Forced the thought that if you have sex, you will get an STD every time, and that abstinence is the only way to avoid teenage pregnancy. It wasn’t until a few years later, I learned this information was actually false.
The first time I ever encountered sex outside of sex education was during my time on the social media website tumblr. I was about 13 years old when one of my friends reblogged a lot of NSFW content. I was initially taken back by the whole experience, but as the years went, I saw more and more NSFW content. This led me to believe that was the only way to have sex.
It wasn’t until after I was in college and my friends got more vocal about sex, that I learned it isn’t all ropes and whips. My friends taught me more about sex than social media, my school, or my parents.
