He Hates the Internet, I Hate this Novel

Jarret Kobek’s I hate the Internet is a terrible novel, I know it and he knows it, exclaiming “Most books are quite bad. Like this one. This is a bad novel.” At first, I thought it was joke, but it’s not. The novel follows Adeline, a middle-aged white woman learning to voice her opinion on twitter, trying to explain her controversial opinions previously stated, like any other modern influencer. Go figure, a story we’ve all heard of before.

As previously stated, this novel is absolute garbage. Before the book beings, there is a trigger warning explaining that sensitive topics will be discussed. The first few chapters were easier to follow than majority of the novel. It contains various plot gaps, introducing information that is not relevant to the story, but an utter nuisance. When important topics do arise, such as revenge porn or gentrification, the real story and issues emerge, wanting to read deeper, and he just stops. Kobek is obviously an educated man but belittles readers by explaining basic topics as if the reader is not familiar, and it is quite irritating.

Overall, this does not appeal to readers that like to read a structured story and do not enjoy sarcasm regarding sensitive and serious topics. This novel in my opinion, aims towards an older audience. $15.95 USD is overpriced for the paperback version of this terrible novel.
