I Just Wanna Know Why

This book is exactly what author, Jarret Kobek, says it is, bad. This book is about a comic book writer named Adeline. She gets into trouble on the internet like many women, young and old, she had an opinion and said it out loud. The plot, if you can even call it such, follows her journey through the internet after committing her terrible sin. Now onto what is really important, how awful this book is. It jumps from one side of the internet to the other, bringing up random facts and using the most boring explanations I have ever been forced to read. How one can put Beyoncé and Clockwork Orange in the same book will continue to forever confuse me. It felt like I had everyone who gets offended by “ok boomer” trying to explain how the internet is rotting my brain while attempting to be “hip”. Reading this book is like zoning in and out mid-conversation with an old conservative white man. Nothing ever really makes sense and all his opinions make you want to scrunch your nose. Now, I know what you’re thinking, ” come on, it can’t be all that terrible”. You’re right, it is not alllll terrible. Kobek does talk about some important things, like gentrification and revenge porn. Both very intriguing topics that he does shed a good light on, but does that outweigh the rest. No. I went into this thinking the book could not be that terrible and maybe it would open up my mind and give me a new insight. After reading, I can confirm I was wrong and I am really lost on if the book is joking about the internet. If someone could please explain what I was supposed to take away from this book I am all ears. If for some crazy reason Mr. Kobek is reading this, I really just want to know why you wrote this, and why nobody stopped you. Simply put this book sucks, but if for some weird reason you liked it. Here’s a list of other equally bad books. But if you’re like the rest of us normal people, here is a list of awesome books the world thinks you should read.
