Unit 5

Week 11

***Last day to withdraw, resign, or change incomplete is Thursday, November 7.

Tuesday 11/5
Look at blogposts. Discuss early digital literature. Look at some of the PoEMM projects. Explore David Clark, 88 Constellations for Wittengenstein. And watch a few pieces at Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries Presents.

Homework: Read—or view—Dennis Cooper’s GIF novel Zac’s Freight Elevator. Please be aware that it contains some graphic material that’s probably not appropriate for public viewing. As you work through chapters, try to pay attention to visual patterns as well as thematic patterns. Can you say what the different chapters are about? Do you notice any meaningful design differences across chapters? Write a question for in-class discussion.

Thursday 11/7
Discuss Zac’s Freight Elevator and controversy surrounding Dennis Cooper’s blog. Tutorial on how to make a GIF at GIPHY.com.

Homework: Read Goldsmith, “Lossy and Jaggy.” As you start collecting some of your favorite GIFs from around the web, think about how his interest in lo-fi media helps you better understand what you see. Keep track of GIFs you like. They might be helpful for your next blogpost, but even before that, they’ll be useful for sharing ideas. Pick three and post them (or a URL link) in our Moodle Forum. We’ll look at them in class; be prepared to say why you like them.

Week 12

Tuesday 11/12
Discuss Goldsmith, “Lossy and Jaggy” and look at favorite GIFs. If time, start work on Blogpost 5 so we can troubleshoot any technical problems.

Homework: Finish GIF poems and submit Blogpost 5 before class on Thursday (11/15). Begin reading Jarett Kobek, I Hate the Internet, chapters 1-5 (pg. 2-26). Identify a passage you’d like to discuss in class and add a question to your reading journal.

Blogpost 5: Due before class on Thursday (11/15).
